“Pretty As Me” - a song about being sexy

You know those good hair days, when you check yourself in the mirror and think… damn, how you doing?

Also my dog Peaches was chewing on a rawhide while I was recording this video, it was really sounding gross, so I asked her to stop between takes… I tacked that on to the end of the video. My dogs don’t support my music career.

Backstory

I like to walk around my house playing guitar. I have a big mirror over my fireplace (classic 50s architecture), that I will sing in to. It’s like I am singing to myself (which I definitely am..) and it’s fun.

This song came from a session where I was singing to myself and just playing a thumpy blues pattern. I was dancing a little (oddly) and for whatever reason was feeling a little sexy. Typically I don’t think of myself as a “sexy person”… I am almost always sweaty, tall and clumsy, and overthink everything too much to believe it. So it was a nice feeling and led to a song coming out quickly.

Love yourself or whatever

Writing Process

I love the E shape finger style blues. I play it a ton and use it for a bunch of my tunes, and just move the capo around so that I don’t wear out any one harmonica. This tune is in G and I had recently picked up a new C harmonica, so I was wanting to honk on it a bit more than usual.

For the lyrics, I was playing a part. As I was writing I was thinking from the shoes of a character. A few years back I read this book called “The Game”, it’s about this society of pickup artists, and came recommended. The characters in that book where self absorbed narcissists, so I was trying to think from that place as I wrote it.

My favorite part of this tune if the wolf howl in the last verse. That came about when trying it out at a live show.

**Wait until you hear this one with harmonies and slick solos, it’s a lot of fun to play and I like to think that translates into how it feels on stage too.

Lyrics

How can I lose when I'm as pretty as this

Sitting here next to you

Both have a cold drink in our hands, and a night with nothing to do

How can I lose when I'm as pretty as this

Sitting here next to you

Oo-oo-oo You got that magic touch and I got the magic moves

You're as pretty as me, how can we ever lose

How can I lose when I'm as pretty as this

Laying here wearing a smile

Both catching our breaths, gearing up for another mile

How can I lose when I'm as pretty as this

I can tell, we'll be here a while

Oo-oo-oo You got that magic touch and I got the magic moves

You're as pretty as me, how can we ever lose

Oo-oo-oo You got that magic touch and I got the magic moves

You're as pretty as me, how can we ever lose

How can I lose when I'm as pretty as this

Standing here watching you go

Turn around and blow me a kiss, you're walking away real slow

How can I lose when I'm as pretty as this

I'm howling at the moon, cause now I know

Oo-oo-oo You got that magic touch and I got the magic moves

You're as pretty as me, how can we ever lose
